Bible- "Pop" quiz on Monday

There will be a small quiz on  Esther and Purim on Monday, September 23th.  Below is the information students should know:

WHAT IS PURIM?
Purim is celebrated on : the 14th day of Adar, the 12th month of the Jewish calendar. Like Easter is changes slightly each year. This Purim will be on March 15.

During Purim people remember how the Jewish people were saved by Esther from the wicked Haman
Traditions during Purim include:
  • Dressing up in costumes
  • Bringing food door to door
  • Giving gifts
  • Reading the story of Esther
  • Baking Haman’s Pockets Cookies
Important People:
Esther:  a Jewish girl selected by King Ahasuerus to be his new wife, who was very brave and told the king about Haman’s plans to kill her people
King  Ahasuerus: King of the Persian Empire in the Old Testament times
Queen Vashti: a wife of King Ahasuerus who was killed because she displeased the king
Haman: an advisor to the king, who was offended by Mordecai and vowed to kill him and all his people (the Jewish people)
Mordecai: Esther’s cousin who refused to bow down to Haman

Language Arts- Point of View

We had fun today discussing Point of View, the perspective an author uses to tell the story.  We looked at first person point of view and watched this video:

Students have written the story in their journal from a perspective from one of the "characters" in the video. We listed the possibilities on the board. They included the little girl, the mom, the sister, the owner of the company, and a few imaginative ones like the security camera, the vending machine and the stuffed animal.

Students are to write from the perspective of the character they choose using words like " I, me, mine" to indicate that the character who is telling the story is in the story.

I am looking forward to reading the stories!

Bible-What is Purim?

This coming week we will be looking at the Jewish celebration of Purim.  Today we looked at this video:

                           Purim

We watched it several times, slowing it down and discussing some of the higher level concepts. We will be watching it again throughout the unit as we discuss the some of the essential questions of our unit like:

A: HOW DO I LIVE A FAITHFUL LIFE IN AN UNFAITHFUL CULTURE?
B: WHAT MAKES A GOOD LEADER (KING)?

C: WHY DO WE HAVE DIFFICULTY UNDERSTANDING GOD’S WAYS?(MYSTERY)
  1. Is there such a thing as mere coincidence? Is God really in control when we can’t hear, touch, see, sense Him?
  2. How is God’ s providence evident in history? (Jewish people-remnant)
  3. Why is God (name of God) absent in the book of Esther? (related to theme of exile)?
  4. How do we know God is present? Is God ever absent? (Psalm 139)
  5. Why does God use unlikely people in a specific time for his purpose?

Thank you to Mrs. Kamminga and Mrs Kroezen for offering to bake the traditional Hamantaschen Purim cookies for next week!

Beginning with Bible

I am really excited to be teaching Bible this year.  We will begin by looking at Esther, a remarkable woman and talking about being faithful in a faithless culture, leadership and how we can understand the mystery of God's ways.

If you are looking for volunteer hours, I am hoping a few parents will volunteer to bake Purim cookies to help us learn more about Purim. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested, I would need at least two dozen for our class. It would count for three GIVE hours.

Purim Cookies
Some of the nicest traditions of Purim are matanot laevyonim, the giving of gifts to the poor, and mishloach manot, the giving of gifts of food to friends and family Purim is known as a time of delicious smells emanating from the kitchen from the baking of the delicious sweets and goodies. Hamantaschen (Haman's pockets), a Purim cookie, is one of the favorites.

Recipe

Ingredients:
· I stick of sweet butter, softened
· 2 tablespoons confectioners sugar
· 2 egg yolks
· 3 tablespoons ice water
· 1 ½ cups of flour
· Apricot or prune jam
· Butter to grease the cookie sheet
· Flour to roll the dough on

Hamantaschen Cookies
Directions
1. Cream the butter and sugar together in the large bowl. Add the egg yolks and continue to mix well.
2. Add the ice water. Gradually stir in flour until a ball of dough is formed. Place the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for several hours or overnight.
3. When ready to continue, take dough out of refrigerator
4. Turn on the oven to 350 degrees.
5. Grease the cookie sheet with the butter.
6. Divide the dough in half. Wrap the extra half in the plastic and put back in the refrigerator.
7. Roll out the dough on a clean, lightly floured surface to a 1/4" thickness. Cut it into 2" circles ( use the top of a glass to "press out" the circles)
8. Place 1 teaspoon of the jam in the center of each circle and fold into three-cornered cookies:
start by pressing two sides together, then fold the third side over and press the ends together.
9. Place the Hamantaschen about an inch apart on the greased cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until lightly browned along the edges.

Makes about 12 Hamantaschen

Getting Started in 5/6 C Language Arts

Welcome to Grade 5/6 C Language Arts  with Mrs. Hendriks.  I am really looking forward to teaching this great bunch of students. I have gotten to know most of the students as librarian, and look forward to getting to know the new students to our class.

All the information you will need to know for class will be posted in the regular News Nuggets each week. This blog will have additional helpful resources that you can access at home, for example handouts, unit outlines or other resources for projects and assignments to help you out with homework.

The best way to contact me is email a.hendriks@hh-cs.org or by phone 905-873-6974 at home in the evenings. Please do not hesitate to call if there is a pressing concern or question.

Language Arts includes Spelling, Handwriting and Literature and Creative Writing which will sometimes be combined, for example, writing assignments may come from the literature we are studying.  We will also have Reading Buddies with Grade One on Fridays.  Mrs. Bonvanie and Mrs. Andrews and I are looking forward to working collaboratively so the classes will have opportunities to work together.

Our first unit is being lead by Mrs. Bonvanie. We will be looking at the Six Traits of Writing. We will be using picture books to help us understand Voice, Organization, Ideas, Conventions, Excellent Word Choice and Sentence Fluency. There will be some writing activities to help us develop skills in this area.

Later in the year we will be doing novel studies on Old Yeller, Tuck Everlasting and a group novel study.

Check in again for more information.
