Paragraphs!

We are working on Paragraphs.  Students have chosen a pre-written topic sentence to work with. They will be writing the rest of the paragraph, keeping in mind key words and transitions in their detail sentences. I am looking forward to seeing the results!

First draft is due on Monday, October 28th.

Below  is a link to the hand outs we used in class to help us write the paragraphs.

Bible Quiz- Chapter One Esther Study Guide Test on Wednesday, October 16

Esther Chapter One Key
1) The story of Esther happened:
After the  Israelites captivity  in Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar. They were now were free to return to

Jerusalem.

2) The Book of Esther is likely included in the Bible for many reasons including:
  • It tells the background and history of the celebration of Purim.
  • God’s power and mystery are revealed even though His name is not mentioned.
  • It is one of two books in the Bible named for women.
3)Some people believe the author is: Mordecai
4)It was written sometime between: 460 and 331 BC
Xerxes= Ahasuerus                         Hadassah=Esther

King Ahasuerus was having a banquet because: he want to display his wealth and celebrate his reign
The banquet lasted for seven days after six months of celebrations.(1:4-5)
INTERESTING:
Archeologists have  found inscriptions in which Ahasuerus referred to himself as
“the great  king, the king of kings, the king of this great earth.” He was obviously a
very proud/ arrogant man.
The king was very generous with his wine, and everyone drank  as much as they wanted to. (1:8)
While Ahasuerus was hosting his banquet, Queen Vashti was hosting her own
banquet  for the women. (1: 9)
When King Ahasuerus called for Queen Vashti, she refused to come. (1:12)

Why do you think she refused to come? List some possible reasons.
  • She didn’t like the king and wanted to embarrass him.
  • She didn’t want to be with him when he was drunk.
  • She wanted to show the women she was with her own power by refusing the king.
The king was furious and burned with anger. (1:12)
The king asked his advisors what to do. (1:13)
Queen Vashti was banished because the advisors said that Queen Vashti’s behavior might
influence other women and there would be no end of  disrespect and discord. (1:18)

Esther: The Movie and Discussion

Digging Deeper

We are going to really dig into the story of Esther, looking at each chapter carefully to ensure we are understanding the setting, characters, background and events of the story.

After reading  reviews from  FOCUS ON THE FAMILY  and from COMMON SENSE MEDIA .org, I decided to use the movie Esther, One Night with the King for further discussion of our study of Esther.

Descriptive Character Analysis

Descriptive Character Analysis

 Two Parts:
1) Paragraph about characters appearance
2) Picture of character

DUE: Tuesday, October 8

Students are working on paragraphing skills and learning about how authors develop characters. Authors spend a lot of time thinking about a character's appearance, thoughts and actions and family history. Some information may not even make it into the story, but it is important for the author to know.

The last few weeks, students have chosen a minor character from Peter Pan to analyze. They have thought out the character's appearance, thoughts and actions, and family history.

For Monday the second (or for some a third) draft of the Appearance paragraph is due. Students are also to draw a picture of that character making sure it fits their description.

We are working on paragraphing skills and this will be a big focus for us throughout the year. Paragraphs are building blocks for our writing.

We used the hamburger model Hamburger Model Template as a way to organize our ideas.  We have talked about the importance of having a strong claim in our topic sentence, using our key words in all our sentences and using transitions to help the sentences flow together.

claim- stating a strong opinion or fact that introduces the topic
Example: Tinklebell is the prettiest fairy in all of Neverland

key words- are words that are found in the topic sentence that will be used in all the other sentences to keep same ideas in the paragraph.
Example: prettiest, fairy (from above claim example)

transitions-words that move the writing along
Example: first, next, also, in conclusion
