Esther Chapter One Key
1) The story of Esther happened:   
After the  Israelites captivity  in Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar. They were now were free to return to 

Jerusalem. 

2) The Book of Esther is likely included in the Bible for many reasons including:
  • It tells the background and history of the celebration of Purim.
  • God’s power and mystery are revealed even though His name is not mentioned.
  • It is one of two books in the Bible named for women.
3)Some people believe the author is: Mordecai
4)It was written sometime between: 460 and 331 BC

King Ahasuerus was having a banquet because: he want to display his wealth and celebrate his reign
The banquet lasted for seven days after six months of celebrations.(1:4-5)
INTERESTING:
Archeologists have  found inscriptions in which Ahasuerus referred to himself as
“the great  king, the king of kings, the king of this great earth.” He was obviously a
very proud/ arrogant man.
The king was very generous with his wine, and everyone drank  as much as they wanted to. (1:8)
While Ahasuerus was hosting his banquet, Queen Vashti was hosting her own
banquet  for the women. (1: 9)
When King Ahasuerus called for Queen Vashti, she refused to come. (1:12)


Why do you think she refused to come? List some possible reasons.
  • She didn’t like the king and wanted to embarrass him.
  • She didn’t want to be with him when he was drunk.
  • She wanted to show the women she was with her own power by refusing the king.
The king was furious and burned with anger. (1:12)
The king asked his advisors what to do. (1:13)
Queen Vashti was banished because the advisors said that Queen Vashti’s behavior might
influence other women and there would be no end of  disrespect and discord. (1:18)
