WHAT IS PURIM?
Purim is celebrated on : the 14th day of Adar, the 12th month of the Jewish calendar. Like Easter is changes slightly each year. This Purim will be on March 15.
During Purim people remember how the Jewish people were saved by Esther from the wicked Haman
Traditions during Purim include:
- Dressing up in costumes
- Bringing food door to door
- Giving gifts
- Reading the story of Esther
- Baking Haman’s Pockets Cookies
Important People:
Esther: a Jewish girl selected by King Ahasuerus to be his new wife, who was very brave and told the king about Haman’s plans to kill her people
Queen Vashti: a wife of King Ahasuerus who was killed because she displeased the king
Haman: an advisor to the king, who was offended by Mordecai and vowed to kill him and all his people (the Jewish people)
Mordecai: Esther’s cousin who refused to bow down to Haman
